How Can EVERY Day Become a Special Day?

Quotidian is one of my favorite words. It’s what you do every day. What you do daily is what makes you who you are. You are what you repeatedly do every day.

What do you do every day? Some things you do automatically—get up, go to the bathroom, brush your teeth… your morning routines. They require no thought or willpower, only execution.

Then you layer on top of that your other activities of daily living: meditate, exercise, coffee, walk the dog, feed your kids…

Routines are critical for your success. If you want to achieve great things, you need to have systems that will lead you down the path you want to go. For that to happen, you need to begin by knowing where you want to go and then take the time to create a plan to get there.

The key to success is routines, whether you are a kindergartener or a sexagenarian.

Why are routines so important?

Routine helps you to move through your day without having to weigh your options at every junction. If you had to stop and think about all the decisions you make daily that you don’t think about now, very little would get accomplished… you wake up, do you get up or roll over? Which side of the bed do you get out on, turn off the alarm or let it go, brush teeth or not, which side of your mouth do you start with? It would all become overwhelming.

Your habits/routines are what will lead you to be successful in your endeavors… if you establish habits that lead to what you want to accomplish.

Do you get up and start your day, or do you answer emails before you even get out of bed? Do you get the most important things you need to be done first, or do you futz away the morning? Do you eat crap all day or do you eat three solid meals? Do you stay up late watching TV, or do you get to sleep early so you get a good 8 hours?

All the little decisions you make during the day add up to who you are. But most people never take the time to look at what they do, how they use their time, and if they are really doing the things they WANT to do and are moving in the direction they want to go.

Today is Labor Day in the USA. Since you have a day off, why not take the time to think about what direction your life is moving in and if that is the direction you WANT to be moving in.

You’ve heard me say this before, and I say it again: this is your one and only precious life. (Mary Oliver) Don’t waste it. Live your life with purpose. Make conscious choices. Take the time to think about what you want and plan your action steps.

If you’re feeling stuck and unable to organizing your days around accomplishing your goals and would like a systematic method for getting this done, join me next Sunday morning, September 10 from 10-2pm at Fort Mason. I will be leading a workshop to help you figure out where you want to go and help you develop a plan to get there. You’ll leave with an Action Plan and a proven system to plan your days so you have the time to achieve what is the most important for you.
