Who sold us this false bill of goods?

Balance is a continual dance and for women, that means in high heels and backward. Balance isn’t something achieved that you can check off your TO Do list. When you watch the tightrope walker (and who doesn’t feel like that!) he is swaying from side to side. He isn’t balanced; he is constantly making course corrections.

Just like an airplane–the pilot is constantly correcting the course because “the winds of change” are impacting the flight pattern.

The problem is you read so much about “balance” you feel like you’re missing something other people have and you want. I am here to tell you: That is the fallacy. No one has balance.

What you want is to have some semblance of control over your days. The trouble is you’re trying to get your own dance steps right while at the same time conducting the orchestra, serving the food, cleaning the bathrooms, making sure everyone else is having a grand time… that you lose sight of why you’re dancing in the first place.

The goal isn’t balance— the goal is to live in the moment– to be fully present wherever you are so you’re a part of your life.

Catch those magical moments

The magical moments pop up at random inconvenient times. If you’re focusing on “balance” you might easily miss them. Like when you’re focused on all you have to do, and suddenly you have the opportunity to sit down and have a deep conversation with your daughter about how to deal with challenging friends. You’re not lecturing, you’re listening, reflecting back on what you’ve heard, relating your own experiences and how you dealt with sticky situations. It’s about laughing in the moment when you’re crying. You’re together and bonded.

Or when your son interrupts your train of thought to ask which shoe is better with the shirt… and you give him a thoughtful answer that will help him once he’s living on his own.

But if all you can think of is the laundry that needs to get folded or the marketing plan that needs to get written, you’ll miss the magic and rush through when the opportunities present themselves.

The days are long, but the years fly by. In the end, no one is going to remember their perfectly folded underpants… or the fact that the marketing plan was delivered on time.

What they will remember is how you made them feel.

So focus on the people in your life. Take time to be with them. What you’re balancing is your ability to focus on what matters most to you.  Maybe the balance comes from your perspective of the situation. It comes from being grounded when others aren’t. Or from having your priorities in order.

Whatever it is, balance is a continual dance for women. In high heels and backward is how we do that. Good thing we’ve got skills!
